The CAR-15 was first developed in 1965 as a shortened version of the M16A1, with a shorter barrel and collapsible stock, for use by US special forces units in Vietnam. The first versions of the CAR-15 had problems with excessive noise and muzzle flash. This was solved by adding a bigger flash suppressor. The CAR-15 (also known as the XM-177E1 or the Model 609 Commando) was used by US special forces units until it was replaced by the M4A1 in 1994.
