The M4 carbine was originally developed from the M16A2 assault rifle as a weapon for tank crewmen. It performed so well that US Special Operations Command modified it into the M4 SOPMOD for all US Speical Operations units. The M4 was also adopted by the 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions.

Unlike the M16A2, the M4 is capable of fully automatic fire, and features a shortened barrel and collapsible stock. The M4 can accept many different accessories. Although most M4s have 30 round box magazines, the design can also accept other, higher capacity magazines such as the 100-round double drum C-mag.

The M4 can also carry the M203 40mm single-shot grenade launcher under the barrel. They can also carry the Masterkey system. The Masterkey is a compact Remington 870 shotgun that can fit below the barrel of an M4 in the manner of an M203. Although it only carries 3 shells it can deliver a close-range punch.
