The AK-74 was developed by the Soviet Union from the AK-47 to fire the new 5.45mm cartridge. The AK-74 was first fielded in 1974 and is the main assault rifle for the Russian Army. The AK-74M is an improved variant with a plastic stock and foregrip instead of wood to decrease weight, and a scope rail on the left side of the receiver. The AK-74 can be fitted with a GP-30 40mm underbarrel grenade launcher.
