Palestinian Liberation Organization

The PLO was founded by Yasir Arafat in 1964 for the purposes of establishing a Palestinian state in place of Israel. Supported by various Arab governments, the PLO managed to transform itself from a terrorist organization into an important political player on the world stage.

Yasir Arafat and the PLO set up shop in southern Lebanon in the 1980s. The PLO acquired WWII-era T-34 tanks Katyushya rocket launchers in an attempt to build a conventional army. When the Israelis invaded, these meagre forces were no match for the IDF's Merkava tanks and fighter aircraft.
