Democratic Revolutionary Movement for the Liberation of Arabistan

The terrorists during the Iranian Embassy Siege belonged to a group called the Democratic Revolutionary Movement for the Liberation of Arabistan that was fighting the Iranian government for regional autonomy for Arabistan, a mostly Arab province that had been oppressed by the ethnically Persian/Shi'ite Muslim Iranians. The group and its operations were backed by Saddam Hussein, who hoped to incite an Arab revolution in Iran right before the Iraqi invasion. The hostages at the Iranian Embassy were intended to secure the release of opposition prisoners being held in Iranian jails.
